Artist Tiziano Cruz brought his powerful performance, Soliloquio, to the Battersea Arts Centre in Lavender Hill, Battersea. Inspired by his childhood memories and the letters he wrote to his mother during the Covid-19 pandemic, Cruz shines a light on the indigenous communities of northern Argentina.
Born and raised in the remote province of Jujuy near the borders of Chile and Bolivia, Cruz’s performance is a scathing critique of discrimination and the marginalization of indigenous artists by those in power. The show begins with a festive procession through the streets, accompanied by a Latin American marching band and dancers, rallying the crowd to remember the forgotten.
The second half of Soliloquio takes place in the Battersea Arts Centre’s Council Chamber, where Cruz presents a heartfelt monologue about his family history and struggles as an artist. Having toured across South America, Canada, and Europe, Soliloquio has opened up new avenues for Cruz in contemporary theatre.
Described as raw, poetic, and uncompromising, Soliloquio tells the true story of the ongoing marginalization of indigenous communities, exploring universal themes of art, justice, and identity. The performance, recommended for viewers aged 14 and older, will be presented in Spanish with English subtitles.
Funded by the Fondo Nacional de las Artes and the Instituto Nacional del Teatro in Argentina, Soliloquio has received critical acclaim, winning the ANTI-FESTIVAL award in Finland 2023 and garnering nominations for Best Latin American Show and Best New Young Artistic Direction awards.
For those interested in experiencing Soliloquio, the performance will take place at the Battersea Arts Centre on October 30, November 1, and November 2. The event will begin with a parade through a public space, lasting approximately 30 minutes. Details on meeting points and the route will be confirmed with ticket holders prior to the performance. Tickets can be purchased on the Battersea Arts Centre website.
