Two teenagers have been sentenced to jail after a tragic incident that resulted in the death of a 16-year-old boy in Luton. The victim, Ashraf Habimana, was not initially involved in the fight that led to his fatal stabbing. The altercation took place in a car park after school hours, where two groups of teenagers, including twin brothers Athif and Althaf Hussaindeen, clashed.
According to the Bedfordshire Police, the conflict escalated to the point where multiple teenagers arrived armed with knives. CCTV footage captured Althaf Hussaindeen assaulting Ashraf, who was then stabbed three times in the back by Athif Hussaindeen. Despite being rushed to the hospital, Ashraf tragically passed away shortly after the incident. Another 16-year-old was also injured but survived the attack.
Following their arrest, Athif Hussaindeen was found guilty of murder, attempted murder, violent disorder, and possession of a bladed article. He received a life sentence with a minimum of 24 years to serve. Althaf Hussaindeen, on the other hand, was convicted of manslaughter and violent disorder, receiving a seven-year sentence.
During the sentencing, the judge emphasized that Ashraf was unarmed and merely trying to escape the situation when he was brutally attacked by the brothers. The victim’s parents expressed their profound grief and loss, highlighting Ashraf’s positive qualities and the impact he had on those around him. In honor of their son, they announced the creation of the Ashraf Habimana Foundation, aiming to raise awareness about the dangers of knife crime.
In addition to the twin brothers, three others involved in the incident have also been sentenced. Detective Inspector Graham Newton, who led the investigation, described the case as a tragic loss that has deeply affected the victim’s family and the community. He stressed the devastating consequences of knife crime and the importance of educating young people about its dangers.
The heartbreaking story of Ashraf’s untimely death serves as a reminder of the devastating impact of violence and the urgent need to address issues related to youth crime and knife violence in society. It is essential for communities to come together to prevent such tragedies and create a safer environment for young people to thrive and fulfill their potential.
