Katherine Murrell, a 27-year-old woman from Great Dunmow, Essex, has overcome three different types of cancer before finding her calling as a London Ambulance Service worker. Her journey began at the age of 16 when she was diagnosed with stage four blood cancer after seeking medical attention for back pain. Despite undergoing months of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, Katherine remained resilient and eventually received the all-clear.
However, her battle did not end there. Just before completing her training to become an emergency medical technician (EMT) in 2021, Katherine discovered she had thyroid cancer. She underwent surgery to remove the cancerous cells and once again emerged victorious. Knowing that she was at risk for developing secondary cancers due to her previous treatments, Katherine made the difficult decision to undergo a double mastectomy in 2023 as a preventative measure. This decision proved to be life-saving, as a tissue sample revealed a small tumor in her breast just before the operation.
Despite the immense challenges she faced, Katherine’s experiences with cancer inspired her to pursue a career in the NHS. She joined the London Ambulance Service, where she now responds to emergencies in North Central London. Her firsthand understanding of what cancer patients go through allows her to provide empathetic and compassionate care to those in need. Katherine’s story serves as a beacon of hope and resilience, especially during Breast Cancer Awareness month in October.
Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in the UK, with hundreds of new cases reported daily. Katherine’s journey highlights the importance of early detection, treatment, and self-care. Her commitment to helping others and making a difference in the lives of patients underscores the invaluable work done by healthcare professionals like her.
