Lewisham shopping centre is set to undergo a major transformation with plans for a rooftop meadow, a new music venue, and the development of 1,700 new homes. The plans have been submitted to the council by LandsecU+I, the regeneration arm of property investment company Landsec, for the 17-acre revamp of the borough’s main shopping destination.

The local authority’s Strategic Planning Committee is expected to review and decide on the proposals next year. The project includes not only a revamped shopping center with a rooftop park but also a new music venue, 1,700 homes – with 20% designated as ‘affordable’ – and improvements to the wider town center.

These plans have been carefully crafted in consultation with residents in the area. Over the past three years, residents have had the opportunity to visit the No.25 consultation space inside Lewisham Shopping Centre to provide their input and feedback on the proposals.

Jon Watson, the development director for LandsecU+I, expressed his excitement about the project, calling it a “once in a generation opportunity” to enhance the lives of the community in and around Lewisham town center. He emphasized that the proposals have been shaped based on the feedback received from thousands of individuals in the area.

The planning application follows a recent demolition works application aimed at kickstarting the transformation process. This early phase will see the development of a new street food market and civic square on the site of the old market, set to begin next year.

Residents and stakeholders are encouraged to share their feedback on the proposals through the website www.morethanaplace.com. This open feedback process allows community members to have their voices heard and play a role in shaping the future of Lewisham shopping center.

Overall, the revitalization project aims to not only update the physical infrastructure of the shopping center but also create a vibrant and dynamic hub for the local community. With a focus on sustainability, inclusivity, and community engagement, the plans seek to transform Lewisham shopping center into a modern and inviting space for all.
