London Restaurant Review: Unlock’s Fusion of Fried Pizza Tacos Delights Foodies

Italian culinary traditions are famously guarded, with certain combinations like pineapple on pizza being met with disdain in Italy. However, a new London restaurant is boldly challenging these traditions by infusing classic Italian cuisine with a Mexican twist. Giovanni Izzo, a Naples native and the founder of Unlock in Hackney, is at the forefront of this culinary experiment. The restaurant aims to combine the best of Italian and Mexican flavors to create a unique dining experience that some may find unconventional.

Giovanni Izzo’s innovative creation, Luna, is set to launch next month. Luna features a fusion of crispy fried pizza dough with a variety of creative toppings that promise to tantalize the taste buds. As a journalist, I had the opportunity to be among the first to sample this intriguing blend of Italian and Mexican cuisine. I must admit, I was both curious and skeptical about the concept of combining Neapolitan pizza with tacos.

Upon trying two of the planned four Luna flavors, one meat-based and one vegetarian, I was pleasantly surprised by the delightful flavors and textures. The meat pizza boasted a rich Genovese sauce complemented by crispy onions and a pecorino dip, while the vegetarian option combined spicy mango with feta, avocado, and a homemade corn dip. Although both versions were delicious, the classic Genovese topping stood out for its depth of Italian flavors. Surprisingly, the fried pizza dough was light and crispy, a testament to the meticulous preparation that involves a two-day process of prepping the dough before frying and baking.

In addition to the meat and vegetarian options I tried, Unlock plans to introduce two more Luna flavors, one vegetarian and one vegan. Each Luna dish comprises five creative ingredients, three of which are crafted in-house. Unlock’s commitment to using fresh ingredients is evident in their daily prep routine for the restaurant and their plan to prepare everything a day in advance for their street food stalls.

With successful locations in Italy near Pisa and Florence, Unlock’s Hackney outpost marks their foray into London’s street food scene. Priced at £8 to £9 each, the Luna is ideal for a street food experience, although it may be a bit small for a full restaurant meal. I would recommend sharing a Luna as a starter and ordering a main course to ensure a satisfying dining experience. The official launch of Luna is scheduled for October 16, with two secret flavors yet to be revealed, promising more surprises for adventurous food enthusiasts.

For those eager to try Unlock’s innovative fusion cuisine, the restaurant is conveniently located at 1 Monkwood Way, Fish Island, E3 2EG.
