Harrods Workers Plan to Strike Over Christmas, Demanding Fair Treatment
In a groundbreaking turn of events, over one hundred employees representing various departments at Harrods have voted overwhelmingly in favor of strike action this Christmas. With a staggering 95 percent majority, 176 workers are prepared to walk out unless the luxury store meets their demands for fair pay and improved working conditions.
Workers from the retail, restaurant, kitchen, and cleaning sectors are united in their call for change. Among their key requests are increased staffing levels across departments, an end to mandatory bank holiday work for cleaners, a daily meal allowance for restaurant and kitchen staff, full transparency on service charges, and fair distribution of cover charges among employees.
The workers, who are being represented by the United Voices of the World (UVW) trade union, are determined to make their voices heard. Ana Ferreira, a cleaner at Harrods for three decades and a UVW member, expressed her frustration, saying, “I have learned that us cleaners are not given any value, we are seen as low people. I do this job because I’m a foreigner in this country and it’s the job that I can do.”
Alice Howick, a Harrods waiter and UVW member, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the importance of fair treatment for all employees. She stated, “Harrods should be setting the standard for retail and hospitality workers, as a world-leading luxury department store. Striking is a last resort for us and will only happen if Harrods continues to be unreasonable in responding to our demands.”
Despite the looming threat of strike action, a Harrods spokesman assured the public that services would not be disrupted during the festive season. The company acknowledges the hard work of its employees, particularly during busy periods like Christmas, and is committed to addressing their concerns through ongoing communication and engagement with recognized unions.
