Greenwich Swimming Pool to Undergo £380k Renovation
Greenwich council has approved a plan to invest over £380,000 in renovating the Thamesmere Leisure Centre swimming pool to prevent its closure. The pool, located in Thamesmead, has been in operation for over 36 years and is facing issues with its ageing gas boilers. To address this, the council will be replacing the existing boilers with a new combined heat and power system, as well as a replacement boiler system.
The total cost of the renovation works is estimated to be £383,622, with the funding coming from a Sport England grant. This investment is part of the body’s swimming pool support fund and is aimed at improving the reliability of the pool and extending the overall lifespan of the facility. The project is expected to be completed by April next year.
Labour Councillor Ann-Marie Cousins, cabinet member for equality, culture, and communities, gave the green light to the proposal on October 28. The decision to renovate the Thamesmere Leisure Centre comes as part of a larger effort to upgrade leisure facilities in the area. Work on a new leisure centre in Woolwich town centre is also underway, with plans to replace the Waterfront centre upon its completion next year.
The funding allocated for the Thamesmead pool follows a similar initiative by Bromley council earlier this year. Two leisure centres in the borough are set to undergo a £29 million upgrade, with improvements planned for the Walnuts Leisure Centre in Orpington and the West Wickham Leisure Centre. The renovations are expected to include enhancements to the gym and pool facilities, as well as the addition of a new café at the West Wickham location.
Overall, the investment in the Thamesmere Leisure Centre reflects a commitment to maintaining and improving leisure facilities in the area. With ongoing upgrades and renovations, residents can look forward to enjoying modern and reliable amenities for years to come.
