A Tribute to Nina Simone
Kicking off the new year is the Southbank Centre x Montreux Jazz Festival Residency, running from January 31 to February 2. The highlight of this event is a Friday night concert featuring the Nu Civilisation Orchestra, with special guests like Corinne Bailey Rae and Laura Mvula performing some of Nina Simone’s most iconic hits. Saxophonist and rapper Soweto Kinch will also debut his new album, ‘Soundtrack to the Apocalypse,’ while playwright Inua Ellams presents a unique blend of live literature and music inspired by Simone’s life and activism.
Linder: Danger Came Smiling
The Hayward Gallery will launch an exhibition on February 11, showcasing the works of feminist artist Linder Sterling, known as Linder. From early photomontages from the punk scene of 1970s Manchester to digital deep fakes, this retrospective will feature a variety of multimedia artworks, including montage, photography, performance, and sculpture.
Imagine Festival 2024
Throughout February, the Southbank Centre will host its annual family festival, Imagine Festival. The festival aims to spark creativity in children aged 0-11 and their families through world-class performances, art, and free fun. Highlights include a stage adaptation of Ross Collins’ beloved books, live poetry performances by poet Kate Wakeling, and a CBeebies Wildlife Jamboree.
The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Performance
In April, the Southbank Centre will host The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra performing Shostakovich’s Symphony No.7. This defiant symphony, composed during the siege of Leningrad by Hitler’s armies, serves as a historical testament to the resilience of the human spirit. Accompanying the performance is a three-channel video installation by filmmaker Ilya Shagalov and art director Kirill Serebrennikov.
