I’m in the Skywatch area of the Cosmodrome, Old Russia, in Destiny 2, with other players, waiting for enemies to spawn. A Hive Tomb ship drops off two enemies, and I shoot them with a machine gun. The objective is to unlock the Legend title, a social marker of in-game achievements. Back when Destiny launched in 2014, players faced a grind to increase levels and gear stats, which led to the discovery of the Loot Cave in the Skywatch.

To mark the 10th anniversary of Destiny, Bungie added the Legend title and a few other objectives in Destiny 2. However, there seems to be a lack of celebration for such a milestone. The game’s 10-year journey has been remarkable, with its longevity, popularity, and influence in the gaming industry. Despite this, the anniversary content within Destiny 2 is underwhelming.

The recent layoffs at Bungie have impacted the game’s development and future plans. Player counts have decreased following the release of The Final Shape expansion. The studio’s future with Sony’s acquisition raises concerns about the Destiny franchise. The lackluster anniversary event reflects the challenges Bungie is currently facing.

While Destiny has evolved over the years, providing immersive gameplay and storytelling, the future of the franchise remains uncertain. With upcoming content and expansions planned, Destiny 2 continues to engage players. As I stand in the Skywatch, reflecting on the past and wondering about the future, the legacy of Destiny hangs in the balance.
