Rob Hao to Showcase Piano Skills at Totally Thames Festival – A Musical Journey Through Water

The Totally Thames festival is back, bringing a night of enchanting performances to The Master Shipwright’s House in Deptford. Among the talented artists set to grace the stage is pianist Rob Hao, renowned for his captivating performances that draw inspiration from the fluidity and depth of water.

Having recently mesmerized audiences at the iconic Sydney Opera House, Rob Hao is excited to bring his unique blend of classical and contemporary piano compositions to the banks of the River Thames. His upcoming performance at the Totally Thames festival will feature works by renowned composers such as Claude Debussy and Franz Schubert, alongside his own original creations that showcase his deep connection to the instrument.

A Musical Prodigy in the Making

Rob Hao’s journey with the piano began at a tender age of 4 and a half, although he admits he only started taking it seriously when he turned 16. Despite what some might consider a late start, Rob believes that his unconventional path has allowed him to explore a diverse range of musical styles and genres, ultimately shaping his unique approach to composition.

Reflecting on his early experiences with music, Rob shares, “I had dabbled in writing music as a teen (not very successfully), but similarly only worked more intensely later on at conservatoire when it happened to be some extra lessons I could take. But now, doing it more professionally has been lots of luck and randomness in the way things have developed.”

Composing the Symphony of Water

For Rob Hao, the piano is not just an instrument but a vessel through which he can express the ever-changing nature of water. Drawing on his years of practice and dedication to the craft, Rob has developed an innate understanding of the piano’s physicality, allowing him to effortlessly translate his musical ideas into captivating compositions.

Explaining his creative process, Rob emphasizes the importance of acknowledging the rich history of piano music, stating, “Of all the instruments, the piano has perhaps the largest repertoire, so every time I compose there is a certain historical weight – probably both good and bad – but to write music, one has to be aware of what has come before.”

A Symphony of Rivers

At the heart of Rob Hao’s performance at the Totally Thames festival lies a deep exploration of rivers and water. Through a meticulously curated selection of pieces, Rob seeks to capture the essence of rivers as symbols of change, resilience, and beauty. From Schubert’s contemplative melodies to Debussy’s ethereal compositions, each piece in Rob’s repertoire offers a unique perspective on the timeless allure of water.

One of the standout compositions in Rob’s lineup is ‘Pebbles in the Water’ by Tristan Murail, a contemporary masterpiece that pushes the boundaries of traditional piano music. Inspired by Debussy’s legacy, Murail’s piece weaves together elements of the past and present, creating a dynamic sonic landscape that mirrors the complexities of our modern world.

In addition to showcasing established works, Rob will also premiere two original compositions titled ‘River Shanties’, which pay homage to the rich maritime history of the Thames. By infusing elements of sea shanties and classical motifs, Rob’s pieces offer a fresh perspective on the relationship between music and water, inviting audiences to embark on a musical voyage unlike any other.

As the sun sets over the River Thames and the melodies of the piano fill the air, Rob Hao’s performance at The Master Shipwright’s House promises to be a transcendent experience that celebrates the enduring power of music and water. Don’t miss this opportunity to witness a musical maestro at the peak of his craft, as he takes you on a mesmerizing journey through the symphony of rivers.
