Queens Park Rangers have gone and extended the stay of last season’s top-scorer Michael Frey, despite all the managerial uncertainty at the club. The Hoops went and placed Spanish head coach Marti Cifuentes on gardening leave at the end of April, leaving assistant coaches Kevin Betsy and Xavi Calm to take charge for the last game of the Championship season against Sunderland at home. It’s like a real-life soap opera over there!
The off-field uncertainty didn’t stop the board from giving the 30-year-old Swiss forward Frey a contract extension. Even though he only managed to score one goal at Loftus Road last season after coming in during the January transfer window, Frey went and bagged himself 10 goals in all competitions in the most recent campaign. Rangers ended up finishing the season in 15th place, a solid seven points above the dreaded relegation zone.
Now, announcing the contract extension, good ol’ Hoops chief executive Christian Nourry had this to say about Frey: “Michi has really shown this season that he ain’t no walk in the park for Championship defences. After being at QPR for a year and a half, we’ve seen him settle in nicely in London and in this league. He’s got this determination and drive that just gets everyone going, and we’re all pretty grateful for everything he’s done so far. Good on ya, mate!” So, there you have it, Frey ain’t going nowhere anytime soon, folks.
