Despite being a lower seller in Japan, the Outback has introduced a special edition called the Black Selection based on the Limited EX trim level. This edition is priced slightly higher than the Limited EX at 4,449,000 yen and features various blacked-out design elements such as 18-inch dark metallic wheels, black roof rails, and a black grille. The Black Selection also includes black bumper guards, front fog lamp covers, and mirror caps, along with black leather and silver stitching on the interior trim and seats. Both the driver and front-passenger seats are equipped with ventilation for added comfort.

In addition to the Black Selection, there are other grades available such as the Active x Black EX and the base X-BREAK EX. The Black Selection model comes in four paint color options: Crystal Black Silica, Crystal White Pearl, Ice Silver Metallic, and Magnetite Gray Metallic. To celebrate its 30th anniversary, the Legacy Outback is currently on display at Subaru Star Square in Shibuya, showcasing the evolution of this crossover wagon over the years.

In terms of performance, the Japanese version of the Outback is equipped with a 1.8-liter turbo horizontally-opposed engine that delivers 175 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque. This power is transferred to all four wheels through a chain-type CVT known as the Lineartronic, which offers smoother and more efficient power delivery compared to a traditional belt system. The Japanese Outback is also slightly lighter than its US counterpart, weighing between 1,680 to 1,690 kilograms.

While the Outback is more affordable in Japan, starting at approximately $29,790 for the X-BREAK EX model, the US market offers the base model at $28,895 excluding additional charges. In the first half of 2024, the Outback sold 81,403 units in the US, showcasing its popularity in the American market. However, sales data for the Japanese market in the same period is currently unavailable.

Overall, the Outback remains a popular choice for those looking for a versatile and stylish crossover wagon. With the introduction of the Black Selection special edition, Subaru continues to offer unique and attractive options for customers seeking a blend of performance and design in their vehicles.
