A devastating blaze tore through a block of flats in Royal Oak, London, on Wednesday night, leaving the fifth floor engulfed in flames. While three individuals managed to escape the fire in Westbourne Park Road, significant damage was done to most of the four-roomed flat in the process.
The London Fire Brigade (LFB) sprang into action upon receiving the first of 15 distress calls reporting the incident at approximately 8:15 pm. Responding swiftly, six fire engines and around 40 firefighters arrived at the scene to combat the raging inferno.
Utilizing a 32-meter turntable ladder as an observation tower, firefighters strategized to tackle the fire from an elevated vantage point. Teams from Paddington, Kensington, West Hampstead, and neighboring fire stations collaborated tirelessly to bring the blaze under control by around 10 pm, preventing further devastation.
Despite the intensity of the fire, fortunately, there were no reports of any injuries, offering a glimmer of relief amidst the chaos and destruction. However, the cause of the blaze was soon uncovered, pointing to the dangerous consequences of the “unsafe use of a candle”.
According to a spokesperson from the LFB, candles rank among the most frequent culprits behind fire incidents, emphasizing the critical importance of adhering to safety protocols. “Candles are one of the most common causes of fire. It’s really important that you never leave a candle unattended and keep them away from anything else that can easily catch alight,” the spokesperson cautioned.
The LFB representative further advised the public to consider opting for battery-powered, flameless LED candles as a safer alternative to traditional candles. These modern alternatives provide a risk-free ambiance even if one falls asleep, eliminating the potential hazards associated with open flames.
For those still opting for traditional candles, the LFB issued crucial safety guidelines to minimize the risk of fire incidents. Placing candles in heat-resistant holders, ensuring they rest on stable surfaces away from flammable materials, and never leaving them unattended are fundamental precautions to prevent catastrophic outcomes.
