Vladimir Putin is currently overseeing a strategic nuclear training exercise that involves the practical launch of ballistic and cruise missiles. This exercise has been labeled as an “extremely exceptional measure” by Putin, and it serves as a clear warning to Ukraine’s allies. Defence Minister Andrei Belousov stated that Russia’s training exercise is designed to simulate a “massive nuclear strike” in response to a first strike. Tensions surrounding nuclear weapons have been escalating since Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, reaching levels not seen since the Cold War.

Putin emphasized that the exercise is not intended to start a new arms race, but rather to maintain Russia’s nuclear forces at a necessary level of sufficiency. This is the second time that nuclear exercises of this nature have been conducted, with the previous drills taking place on October 18 in the Tver region. During the drills, Putin’s forces used the Yars intercontinental ballistic missiles, also known as “city killers” due to their ability to reach almost any location worldwide.

In a video call with Russia’s top military leaders, Putin reiterated that Russia’s nuclear arsenal is a crucial guarantor of the country’s sovereignty and security. He highlighted the importance of having modern strategic forces that are always ready for combat, especially given the current geopolitical tensions and emerging threats.

Putin issued a warning that Russia will respond accordingly if the West allows Kyiv to launch long-range weapons aimed at Russia. He stated that such an attack would be considered an act of war by NATO, and Russia’s military department is considering various response options. Putin expressed hope that the West has heard his previous warnings, emphasizing that Ukrainian troops cannot operate such weapons independently and would require assistance from NATO officers.

The Russian dictator made it clear that any decision to strike deep into Russian territory would result in a reaction from Russia, although the specifics of the response are yet to be determined. The Russian defence ministry is actively considering potential courses of action in response to this threat.

Overall, Putin’s nuclear training exercises with ballistic and cruise missiles serve as a stark reminder of Russia’s military capabilities and willingness to defend its interests. The escalating tensions surrounding nuclear weapons underscore the importance of diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation and maintain stability in the region.
