A former school site in Merton is being considered for sale in order to build affordable homes. The Stanford Primary School, located on Chilmark Road near Norbury, was part of the PACE Academy Trust until it closed in August. The school had faced declining enrollment numbers, leading to its closure after an application to the Secretary of State for Education.
Following the closure, efforts were made to relocate the students to other schools, with SEND students temporarily placed at Liberty Primary School. The council now has three options for the site: continued use for education, other council purposes, or sale for development. However, the council has determined that there is no current educational need for the site to remain a school.
Due to its location and size, the council has ruled out other council uses for the site, leading to the recommendation for its disposal. Merton is now looking into the feasibility of housing development on the site, with a decision expected later this month. Approval from the Secretary of State will be necessary before the site can be sold for housing development.
The closure of Stanford Primary School marks the end of an era for the site, but the potential for affordable housing may bring new life to the area. As Merton explores the options for the site’s future, the community eagerly awaits the outcome of the feasibility work and the possibility of new homes in the area. Stay tuned for updates as the council moves forward with their plans for the former school site.
