Former South East Stars head coach, Johann Myburgh, has been appointed as the new Surrey women’s head coach, marking the beginning of a new era for women’s cricket in the region.
With over 20 years of experience as a player in the UK, representing teams like Hampshire, Durham, and Somerset, Myburgh retired in 2018 with an impressive career total of over 12,000 runs. His coaching style at the South East Stars was known for its aggressive approach to the game, leading the team to success in the 2021 Charlotte Edwards Cup and reaching the finals of both the T20 and 50-over competitions.
Under Myburgh’s leadership, the Stars provided opportunities for young talents to shine, with players like Ryana Macdonald-Gay and Paige Scholfield making significant progress and even earning spots in the England squad. Myburgh’s coaching experience also extends to his time with the Oval Invincibles in the Hundred, where the team secured back-to-back victories in the first two editions of the competition.
Expressing his enthusiasm for the new role, Myburgh stated, “This is a really exciting time for the women’s game and for this group of players. There’s been a lot of hard work done over the last four years and we will look to take that forward as we become Surrey. I want us to continue to play an exciting and fearless brand of cricket and play with freedom.”
Emma Calvert, the director of women’s cricket at Surrey CCC, shared her excitement about Myburgh joining the team, highlighting his dedication to player development and his wealth of experience in the sport. She expressed confidence in Myburgh’s ability to lead the team as they embark on the next chapter of women’s cricket at Surrey.
With Myburgh at the helm, Surrey women’s team is poised to continue their journey of growth and success, building on the foundation laid by the South East Stars and aiming to make their mark in the world of women’s cricket. The appointment of Myburgh signals a commitment to excellence and a bright future ahead for women’s cricket in Surrey.
