Female Union Official Injured in Picket Line Assault
A female union official sustained whiplash and a fracture on the picket line after being “assaulted three times” by security guards, a union has claimed. The alleged incident took place outside Harrods on Sunday, the second day of strike action by more than 100 retail, restaurant, kitchen, and cleaning staff at the luxury department store. The workers are represented by United Voices of the World (UVW), a trade union for low-paid migrant workers. UVW is not a recognized union by Harrods.
Molly de Dios Fisher, a UVW official, was handing out leaflets at the entrance to Harrods. She alleged: “There were a number of security guards who were being quite unpleasant, rude, and sarcastic. “I was pushed so forcefully to the ground, several times. The second time my neck went back sharply. I have whiplash and a fractured finger as a result. Luckily, no one else was hurt.” Ms. Dios Fisher claims she was left “extremely shaken and upset” by the incident.
Union’s Response and Workers’ Demands
Petros Elia, UVW General Secretary, said: “There was no justification whatsoever that the security officers who were about twice the size of Molly should have used such force against her.” Workers are calling for more staff across multiple departments, an end to mandatory bank holiday work for cleaners, a daily meal allowance for restaurant and kitchen workers, and an end to cover charges, or fair distribution amongst workers.
A spokesman for Harrods said the company recognizes the “enormous contribution” of its colleagues, particularly at busy trading periods like Christmas. He said: “We have contingency plans in place over the Christmas period to ensure our services are not disrupted by this planned action. We have ongoing, open communication directly with our colleagues and our recognized unions on pay and benefits. We are committed to working with our colleagues directly to address concerns, as we have been to date and continue our constructive relationship with our recognized unions on pay and benefits.” Harrods have been approached for comment.
Security Industry Authority’s Statement
A spokeswoman from the Security Industry Authority said: “Protecting the public is our priority, and licensed security operatives play a vital role in keeping people safe. All SIA licensed security operatives are trained in conflict management. Should a license-holder do anything that means they fail to comply with our licensing conditions or they do not live up to the standards of behavior we require, we will investigate the matter.”
