AFC Wimbledon is set to make a long-awaited return to Plough Lane as they prepare to face Carlisle United. The stadium and pitch had suffered damage due to flooding caused by the River Wandle bursting for the first time since 1968. The local area experienced heavy rainfall of over 51mm, almost three times the average for the month, leading to the postponement of several games including Wimbledon’s EFL Cup clash against Newcastle.
Despite the setbacks, the club managed to repair the damage with the help of fan support. Graham Stacey, a former Dons Trust board member, set up a JustGiving page which raised over £120k to assist with the repairs. Manager Jackson expressed his excitement at the prospect of returning to Plough Lane, praising the club’s response to the incident as “unbelievable.”
The team had been on a good run of form before the forced break, winning their last home game against rivals Milton Keynes. Jackson lamented the missed opportunity to continue their momentum with home games against Crewe and Accrington. However, he remains positive and eager to face the challenge ahead.
The rescheduled game against Newcastle at St James’ Park saw the Dons narrowly lose 1-0, but the focus now shifts to the upcoming match against Carlisle. Jackson is looking forward to being back at Plough Lane and playing in front of the supporters who have stood by the team during this challenging time.
The repairs to the stadium included pumping out around 100,000 litres of water and laying a replacement section of the pitch. With the pitch now ready and the team eager to return to action, anticipation is building for the homecoming at Plough Lane. Fans and players alike are looking forward to the emotional and exciting return to their beloved stadium.
