An investigation into the installation of temporary speed limits on the A20 bypass in South London has sparked controversy, with claims that incorrect signage led to fines for numerous drivers. The London Assembly has urged the Mayor of London to address the issue, following allegations from Tory members that thousands of motorists were penalized unfairly.
The temporary 40mph speed restrictions were in effect on the A20 at the Sidcup bypass from October 2023 to October 2024. Transport for London (TfL) attributed these limits to flooding-related incidents in the area. However, concerns arose when an unauthorized 50mph speed limit sign was allegedly placed on the road while the temporary 40mph restriction was still in place.
Dominic Smith of Patterson Law revealed that the firm had been inundated with inquiries from individuals regarding driving offenses in the area. This influx of cases prompted Conservative Assembly Member Thomas Turrell to bring attention to the issue during a recent meeting. Turrell accused TfL of installing incorrect signage and failing to publish the traffic order on their website, insinuating that the organization was not abiding by proper protocols.
During the assembly meeting, Turrell expressed his dismay, stating, “Thousands of drivers have been fined and penalized due to TfL’s apparent disregard for the rules surrounding temporary speed limits on the A20 at the Sidcup bypass. There is a glaring lack of adherence to regulations, which is unacceptable.” He further criticized TfL, claiming that they should not have the authority to oversee their own actions in this matter.
Green London Assembly Member Caroline Russell, however, defended TfL’s actions, asserting that the signage installed after the emergency traffic order in October 2023 was compliant with national regulations. She emphasized that warning signs about the 40mph limit were in place well in advance of enforcement, giving drivers ample notice to adjust their speed accordingly.
Following a vote of 16-3, the assembly passed a motion to address the situation. A TfL spokesperson responded to the allegations, emphasizing that safety remains their top priority. They clarified that the 40mph limit was implemented in response to safety concerns arising from flooding in the area. The spokesperson acknowledged the brief presence of an incorrect 50mph sign, which was promptly rectified once discovered.
In an effort to ensure transparency, the spokesperson reassured the public that all other signage related to the temporary speed limit was in compliance with regulations. They emphasized that safety measures were implemented to protect road users and prevent further incidents in the area.
The debate surrounding the temporary speed limits on the A20 bypass serves as a reminder of the complexities involved in managing road safety measures. As authorities work to address the concerns raised by motorists and assembly members, the importance of clear and accurate signage remains a vital aspect of maintaining safe driving conditions for all travelers on the road.
