Professional Boxer Craig Richards Dominates Padraig McCrory in Belfast Showdown

In a thrilling display of skill and determination, Crystal Palace light-heavyweight Craig Richards secured a knockout victory in his first ring appearance of 2025. The 34-year-old athlete delivered a stunning performance, halting Padraig McCrory (19-2) in the eighth round at Belfast’s SSE Arena.

This momentous win marked Richards’ return to the ring after a hiatus following a tough loss to Willy Hutchinson in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, back in June. With this victory, Richards elevated his professional record to an impressive 19-4-1, with 12 knockouts to his name.

The defining moment of the fight came when McCrory was dropped for the full count by a powerful body shot from Richards. The crowd erupted in excitement as Richards claimed victory in an electrifying fashion.

Reflecting on his performance, Richards shared his mindset and strategy leading up to the fight in an interview with Fightfantvlive on YouTube. He expressed his focus and determination during his training camp, emphasizing his desire to showcase his skills and abilities in the ring.

“I was zoned in during my camp and wanted to prove the levels I was at,” Richards stated. “I went into someone else’s backyard. He had massive support. You heard the boos when I was walking in but I stayed focused. There were boos on the way in and cheers on the way out – that’s always a good feeling.”

Acknowledging McCrory’s skills as a boxer, Richards highlighted his tactical approach to the fight. He recognized McCrory’s tendency to “load up” on his punches and strategically planned to capitalize on this vulnerability as the fight progressed.

“I knew he (McCrory) was a good boxer but he loads up a lot (with his punches). I knew I would catch him down the stretch, it was about being sensible,” Richards explained.

In addition to his impressive performance in the ring, Richards revealed a significant change in his training regimen by switching trainers from Shane McGuigan to Tony Sims. This decision proved pivotal for Richards, as he found renewed motivation and focus in his training at the Matchroom Gym under Sims’ guidance.

“It just wasn’t clicking for me at the McGuigan gym,” Richards admitted. “I went back to the Matchroom Gym (run by Sims) – it has all come together again and I can build off that now. I felt I needed back to the formula I was at – the hard, long days and more sessions.”

Richards’ dedication to his craft and willingness to make strategic adjustments in his training routine ultimately paid off in a triumphant victory over McCrory. As he looks ahead to future challenges and opportunities in the boxing world, Richards remains focused on further honing his skills and continuing to elevate his performance in the ring.
