Developers at Rockwell Property have decided to make changes to their plans for the One Battersea Bridge tower block in response to the backlash from residents. The original proposal, which included 35% affordable housing with a split favoring social rent, has been updated to now offer 50% affordable housing, all at social rent, in addition to reducing the building height from 33 to 28 storeys based on feedback from the community.
The revised plans will see a total of 110 homes in One Battersea Bridge, with 56 private units and 54 affordable units, including 27 family-sized units. Moreover, the development will also feature over 5,700sqft of affordable office space for small businesses and a nearly 3,000sqft community space for charities. Public improvements such as a new ‘Waterfront Plaza’ and a riverside restaurant are also in the works to attract visitors and stimulate the local economy.
Nicholas Mee, the managing director at Rockwell, emphasized the collaboration with residents and the council to ensure that the updated plans cater to the needs of the Wandsworth community. He stated, “We’re confident this proposal delivers what’s needed: vibrant public spaces, support for local charities and businesses, and most importantly, the affordable homes Wandsworth needs.”
Earlier objections to the original plans included concerns about the tower’s size, which residents feared would obstruct the river view and lead to traffic issues. Notably, a Change.org petition against the construction gathered over 1,950 signatures, with notable figures like Mick Jagger expressing their disapproval.
In light of the proposed changes, Rockwell will be submitting the revised plans to Wandsworth council for further review and consideration. The updated proposal aims to address the community’s feedback and provide a more inclusive and beneficial development for Wandsworth residents.
