Chris Lock, a former firefighter turned Charlton Athletic coach, has had an interesting journey back into the world of football after losing interest in the sport due to a pelvis problem. He found his passion for coaching reignited when his sons started playing football, leading him to take on coaching roles at various levels.
Lock’s experience as a firefighter taught him valuable teamwork and leadership skills that he now applies to his coaching career. He started by coaching young lads at Peckham Town and eventually founded his own football club, Carpe Diem FC, which serves the community in Catford, Lewisham, and Beckenham.
After applying for a coaching role at Charlton in 2019, Lock’s skills were quickly recognized, and he was brought in to help with the U13s team. He has since moved up the ranks to become the lead coach of Charlton Athletic’s U21 side. Additionally, he has been assisting Paul Nevin, the interim boss of the England Elite League squad, showcasing his coaching abilities on a national level.
Lock’s unexpected opportunity to coach the England U20s team through the FA and PFA’s England Elite Coach Programme came as a surprise to him. Despite his initial doubts, Lock impressed the selectors and secured the role for the next three months. His coaching journey has been marked by hard work, dedication, and the trust of key figures like Steve Avory, the former academy director at Charlton.
As Lock continues to excel in his coaching career, he remains humble and focused on doing the best job possible in any role he takes on. His passion for football and coaching shines through in his work, and his dedication to developing young talent is evident in his coaching style.
