Over the weekend, South London united to honor the 110th anniversary of the start of World War One and pay tribute to all those who made the ultimate sacrifice in both World Wars.
In Lambeth, a solemn gathering took place at The African and Caribbean War Memorial in Windrush Square, Brixton. MPs, veterans, military personnel, and guests observed a minute of silence before a Military parade passed through the square. This event also marked the 10th anniversary of the memorial’s unveiling. The poignant inscription “Remembering the Forgotten” serves as a powerful reminder of the African and Caribbean service personnel who often go unrecognized. This memorial, endorsed by Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, was officially installed on Windrush Day in 2017.
It is estimated that out of the 17.3 million service personnel who served in the World Wars, around 2 million were from Africa and the Caribbean. This highlights the significant contribution and sacrifice made by individuals from these regions.
In Lewisham, the community came together in large numbers to participate in two services. One service was held at Lewisham War Memorial in Lewisham High Street, led by Rev. Peter Organ, while the other took place at Deptford War Memorial. Local dignitaries, veterans, and representatives of various organizations laid wreaths at both memorials to honor the fallen.
Greenwich also saw various remembrance events organized by different branches of the Royal British Legion including Abbey Wood and Thamesmead, Blackheath and Charlton, and Eltham and Well Hall. In 2022, Greenwich council reaffirmed its commitment to the Armed Forces Covenant at Woolwich Town Hall. This covenant promises fair treatment for those who serve or have served in the Armed Forces and their families.
These acts of remembrance and tributes demonstrate the unwavering respect and gratitude that South London holds for its war heroes. The turnout at these events reflects the community’s commitment to never forget the sacrifices made for the freedom and peace we enjoy today. Let us continue to honor and remember the courage and sacrifice of all those who served.
