Remembrance events are scheduled to happen throughout Greenwich next weekend, with various Royal British Legion branches participating. These branches include Abbey Wood and Thamesmead, Blackheath and Charlton, and Eltham and Well Hall.

The events will include a two-minute silence, laying of wreaths, remembrance services, and a public parade to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving for peace and freedom.

Councillor Jit Ranabhat, Mayor of the Royal Borough of Greenwich, emphasized the importance of honoring the armed forces community, highlighting the borough’s rich military heritage and its commitment to the Armed Forces Covenant. The covenant, which was resigned in 2022 at Woolwich Town Hall, ensures fair treatment for current and former Armed Forces personnel and their families.

The weekend’s schedule includes a wreath-laying ceremony at Memorial Hospital in Shooters Hill on Friday at 2 pm, followed by another ceremony at Greenwich Cemetery war memorial on Well Hall Road at 2:45 pm.

Saturday will be a busy day with wreath-laying ceremonies at various locations such as Thamesmead Clocktower, Maze Hill war memorial, St. John’s Church in Charlton Village, and Cemetery Lane war memorial. The day will conclude with ceremonies at Plumstead Cemetery war memorial and Woolwich New Cemetery war memorial.

Remembrance Sunday will feature a parade starting at 10:40 am and a two-minute silence at 11 am at the Eltham war memorial, followed by a service at S. John’s Church in Eltham Hill. Similar services will also take place at St Michaels and All Angels Church in Abbey Wood and Woolwich St George’s Garrison Church.

On Monday at 11 am, a two-minute silence will be observed at Woolwich Town Hall, led by the Mayor. For those interested in learning more about available services and support for the armed forces, they can visit the royalgreenwich.gov.uk/armed-forces website.

The weekend’s events provide an important opportunity for the community to come together and pay tribute to the sacrifices made by the armed forces. It is a time to reflect on the service of both past and present members of the military and show support for those who have dedicated their lives to serving their country.
