A fraudster named Shehzada Nawaz has been caught targeting elderly people, including a 95-year-old victim, at ATMs in various locations across the country. Nawaz, 41, was sentenced to 17 months in jail after admitting to multiple counts of theft and fraud by false representation. He would approach elderly customers at ATMs near Tesco or Sainsbury’s stores and pretend the machine was broken, offering to help them while actually stealing their bank cards and PIN numbers. He used the stolen cards to make transactions and withdraw cash, totaling around £2,200.
Nawaz was smartly dressed to gain the trust of his victims and would commit multiple offenses in the same location on the same day. He was even on holiday with his family when committing some of these crimes. The Proactive Economic Crime Team, in collaboration with Tesco Bank and the City of London Police, identified Nawaz and his involvement in multiple incidents across the country. Through their investigative efforts, Nawaz was arrested and taken off the streets.
Detective Constable Toby Wilson of SEROCU emphasized that Nawaz specifically targeted older members of society and used his appearance to deceive them. The team’s work led to Nawaz’s arrest and subsequent imprisonment. To protect yourself from fraud, it is important to be vigilant and informed about common scams.
