A crisis support group led by the Rastafari community has recently secured a new building to expand its services in Lewisham, Lambeth, and Southwark. The Rastafari Movement UK Wellbeing (RMUK Wellbeing) offers free hot meals, affordable supermarket items, and advice to those in need. With the help of 200 volunteers, the organization previously operated from a small flat in Lee but now has a five-year lease in Boundfield Road, Downham.

Stella Headley, the 59-year-old chief executive of RMUK Wellbeing, highlighted the group’s focus on supporting individuals who cannot access traditional food banks due to various reasons such as mobility issues or health conditions. She mentioned that Downham is considered a “food desert” with limited access to food services, especially those catering to diverse cultural needs.

The move to the new building was made possible through funding and support from Action Against Hunger UK, allowing RMUK Wellbeing to renovate the space. The new facility will house a training kitchen for educational courses on food sourcing, budget cooking, and setting up street food businesses. Additionally, the organization plans to establish a hub for food distribution, reaching around 3,000 people weekly through various projects.

Founded in 2021 by lifelong Lewisham resident Ms. Headley, RMUK Wellbeing focuses on promoting Ital food, fresh fruits, and vegetables while supporting African heritage households. The group collaborates with food suppliers like The Felix Project and supermarkets to rescue surplus food that would otherwise go to waste.

By connecting individuals with essential services and resources, RMUK Wellbeing aims to empower communities and address systemic inequalities. The organization recruits former service users as volunteers, providing them with training and support to give back to their communities.

Despite receiving grants and donations, Ms. Headley expressed the ongoing need for additional staff and resources to sustain their operations. She emphasized the importance of revenue funding to ensure the long-term viability of their projects.

In conclusion, RMUK Wellbeing’s efforts to provide culturally appropriate support and food services reflect their commitment to addressing social disparities and building resilience within communities. Through their innovative approach and collaborative partnerships, the organization continues to make a meaningful impact on the lives of those they serve.
