A hospital has created a support group to assist individuals who have suffered a stroke by providing guidance, sharing experiences, and forming new connections with other stroke survivors.
The Lambeth Stroke Peer Support Group was established by Guy’s and St Thomas’ Community Stroke Team in March, hosting sessions every other week over a 10-week period. Participants receive information on stroke prevention, the value of family and friends, staying connected with the community, exercise and nutrition, managing mood and fatigue, and the importance of finding joy after a stroke.
One member of the group, Steve Ridley, 52, from Streatham, experienced a stroke in July 2022 while working from home. Following hospitalization, Mr. Ridley was diagnosed with high blood pressure and a brain bleed on the left side, receiving six months of hospital care and intensive rehabilitation. The stroke impacted his speech and the right side of his body, leading to the use of a walking stick.
Reflecting on his experience with the support group, Mr. Ridley shared, “Prior to the stroke, I was very talkative and confident in public speaking. At times, I find it challenging to explain my speech difficulties or memory lapses to others. However, within the group, I discovered that I’m not alone in facing these challenges.”
Life post-stroke can present various hurdles such as physical impairments, financial strains, and feelings of solitude. The Lambeth Stroke Peer Support Group aims to offer continued assistance after hospital care and rehabilitation services conclude.
Lolly Short, the Stroke Care Advisor at Guy’s and St Thomas’, who oversees the group, emphasized the sense of belonging and understanding fostered among members. She mentioned, “Through connecting with others who share similar experiences, group members begin to feel a sense of community where they are acknowledged and supported.”
