A new village in South London is set to expand with the addition of 449 more homes, despite initial rejection from the local council. The Greater London Authority (GLA) stepped in to overrule Wandsworth Council’s decision and grant planning permission for the new homes in Springfield Village, Tooting. This development is part of the final phase of the redevelopment of Springfield Hospital, with the goal of meeting affordable housing targets in the capital.
Jules Pipe, London’s deputy mayor for planning, approved the scheme on October 8, emphasizing the importance of addressing the housing crisis and supporting economic growth through the construction of new homes. Out of the 449 new homes, 220 will be designated as affordable housing, contributing to meeting the identified need for such accommodations in the area. Additionally, the plans include provisions for new car parking spaces and cycle parking spaces to accommodate residents.
The completion of Springfield Village will bring about 2.7 acres of new public space to Springfield Park. The development also includes two new mental health units, aligning with South West London St George’s Mental Health NHS Trust’s efforts to modernize mental health facilities in the region. The sale of remaining land for the construction of the additional homes will help fund the £110 million redevelopment of Tolworth Hospital in Kingston, a crucial investment in healthcare infrastructure.
Despite initial concerns about the impact on local infrastructure, GLA officers determined that the development would have a minimal effect on the surrounding highway network. They also noted that the scheme would not substantially harm the openness of the Metropolitan Open Land it occupies, as it involves the reuse of previously developed land.
