London’s New Year’s Eve fireworks display is a highly anticipated event that attracts both locals and tourists alike. However, there is a growing concern over the presence of fake ticket websites and touts that could potentially ruin the experience for many attendees. A recent Oversight Committee investigation led by Emma Best AM has shed light on the existence of ‘very convincing’ websites posing as legitimate ticket providers, putting visitors at risk of harm.

In response to these findings, the Greater London Authority (GLA) has called for a proactive media and social media campaign to warn tourists about the risks associated with fake ticket websites and touts. They have also urged the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, to provide data on the number of fake websites reported to Action Fraud. This comes after reports of fraudulent tickets being sold at exorbitant prices, causing delays at the event gates and leaving genuine ticketholders unable to enter the venue. City Hall was even forced to issue refunds totaling £61,000 due to the ticket scam.

David Holley, GLA Head of Events for London, has acknowledged the rise in fake tickets and attributed it to a change in audience behavior. To address crowd management issues, organizers have implemented stricter security measures, including a more robust ticketing system and increased ticket prices to enhance security and crowd control. Despite these efforts, the Oversight Committee stresses the need for a comprehensive warning to the public on an international scale to prevent a repeat of last year’s disappointments.

Committee Chair Emma Best AM emphasized the importance of eliminating fake tickets to ensure a seamless New Year’s Eve celebration for all attendees. She highlighted the distress caused to those who paid substantial amounts for tickets only to be turned away at the gates. The Committee aims to preserve the reputation of London’s New Year’s Eve fireworks event and showcase the city’s beauty to a global audience for years to come.

As we look forward to the upcoming New Year’s Eve festivities, it is crucial for attendees to be vigilant and cautious when purchasing tickets. By staying informed and aware of the risks associated with fake ticket websites, we can all contribute to a safer and more enjoyable experience for everyone. Let’s make sure that fake tickets are stamped out, and that the spirit of celebration remains untarnished.
