Drivers dropping off commuters at Bromley South railway station are facing fines of £100 for stopping on the road, prompting calls for Southeastern Railway to create a designated drop-off point. Members of the Bromley Conservative Group have raised concerns about the fines and the lack of a safe drop-off area for commuters.
Peter Fortune, MP for Bromley and Biggin Hill, expressed his worries in a letter to Southeastern’s managing director, Steve White, highlighting the recent enforcement measures by the Met Police to prevent drivers from using the access road beside Bromley Police Station as a drop-off point. He emphasized the need for a designated area to prevent traffic congestion and ensure accessibility for commuters, especially those with disabilities or mobility issues.
In addition to Mr. Fortune’s concerns, Thomas Turrell, Bexley and Bromley member of the London Assembly, also joined the call for a solution, proposing an agreement with the nearby Waitrose store on Masons Hill to address the issue. Waitrose has expressed its commitment to finding a safe accessibility solution for its customers and the community.
Conservative councillor Nicholas Bennett, responsible for transport and road safety at Bromley council, noted the long-standing congestion issues on the access road and suggested converting a portion of the Waitrose car park into a drop-off point. He advised motorists to utilize the free parking at Waitrose for up to 90 minutes to avoid fines and traffic disruptions.
While Southeastern Railway has been approached for comment on the matter, the Met Police confirmed that enforcement measures have been in place since October 15 to address the road blockages caused by stopping and parking on the access road. Andrew Wood from the Network Rail and Southeastern Kent Route Alliance expressed willingness to collaborate with local stakeholders to find solutions and funding for a designated drop-off point.
